Peru Amazon: Yaguas National Park

National Geographic have released their top destinations for 2019 - coming in 1st is surprisingly Mexico City. More interestingly, coming in 2nd is the Peruvian Amazon. At the start of 2018 Peru announced a huge new (roadless) park in the Amazon: Yaguas National Park. Located in the Loreto Region of northern Peru, it covers more than 868 hectares of Amazonian rainforest. To give some context, that's almost the same size as Yellowstone National Park! Home to more than 3,000 species of plants, 500 species of birds and 160 species of mammals. It also holds around 550 species of fish, making this one of the richest freshwater fish assemblages in the world!

This area is now protected from illegal mining and the exploitation of its rich natural resources, and should be open to tourists in the coming months.
