Day 1
Arrive in Bangalore and transfer to TGMP’s Centre for Conservation and Education at Rathnapuri, Hunsur. Accommodation is in wooden cabins, raised on stilts. e have one ten-bed cabin and four four-bed cabins. Bathrooms and toilets are in a separate block next to the cabins and have hot and cold running water with western style loos. Settle in, look around the lake and campus for herps in the evening. Set up camera traps around campus.
Day 2
Hands on with local species that we find. Some inputs on handling venomous snakes. Session on snakebite first aid and treatment as well as the snakebite issue in India. Check and reset camera traps.
Afternoon safari. Evening walk about looking for local wildlife and herps.
Day 3
Leave at 7:30 AM to Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary (about an hour away). 45 minute boat ride, through the sanctuary- migratory birds and Indian freshwater crocodiles. Late breakfast at Mysore. Return to campus. Spend time out on the lake, bird watching, angling, kayaking, etc. (Dependent on water levels).
Night walk to look for chameleons, various snakes and other small wildlife.
Day 4
Head to Kabini early in the morning to look for otter signs and set up camera traps. There’s a good chance we’ll even see the otters, but, we can’t be assured of that. Spend the morning looking around the reservoir- great birding place and loads of interesting spoor. We might see the odd snake or two as well. Indian breakfast at HD Kote on the way back. At campus, more hands on with herps and the chance to take photographs of various animals found around the campus.
Day 5
Early departure to Agumbe. (6 hour drive). Breakfast at Hassan. Arrive at Agumbe Rainforest Research Station. Settle in to tents/ dormitory. Bathrooms are a separate block with running water. Head out on the stream, looking for various wildlife. It will be wet! Night walk to look for slender loris, flying squirrel, pit vipers and other wildlife. If there is a king cobra rescue call while we’re there, we’ll head over with staff from the field station.
Day 6
Herping, visiting various locations around the field station. Look for flying lizards.
Day 7
Transfer to Mangalore. Accommodation in hotel by beach. Relax & Enjoy the last night of the trip.
Day 8
Transfer to airport for flight home.
